Essential Oils Can be Used in Lieu of Drugs

Essential oils have been used for hundreds of years. Records of healing with essential oils date back to the twelfth century. Modern medicine has turned away from basic healing with medications. Doctors do not want to jeopardize their standing with the big pharmaceutical companies by suggesting patients use essential oils. That is unless you go to a holistic practitioner. I first discovered essential oils through my holistic chiropractor and I’ve been using them ever since.

We are programmed to think that pills are the only answer. However, have you ever noticed the long list of side effects that come with these pills? Doesn’t that scare you? A doctor may tell you that the side effects are worth taking care of the major problem. Really? I’m not so sure about that!

Taking oral medications can damage the stomach and digestive system. Also taking certain pain killers can be addictive. Fortunately, there is another way to treat the body. This is through the olfactory system and the skin. The scent or application of essential oils can greatly influence our mental and physical well being.

ESSENTIAL OILS COME FROM NATURE PURE AND SIMPLE

Have you ever wondered how essential oils work with the human body? Well, we have something in common with essential oils. Essential oils come from plants. Plants are made of water, carbon, and energy and so are we. Since our biochemistry is similar essential oils resonate with our bodies.

One of the most powerful conduits into the body is through the olfactory system.  Inhaling the fragrance of essential oils carries molecules to our limbic system which then reaches the brain. This relates to our expressive brain which controls our emotions and stress levels. Essential oils can also be used in a diffuser but be sure it is a cold diffuser as heat can destroy certain particles in the oils.

Scent is a very powerful influence on us. Certain scents can calm or excite us. Many can bring back memories that are filed away in our hippocampus. The scent of Old Spice brings back fond memories of my Grandfather. Here are a few everyday uses for essential oils:

  • Scents of sage and cedar can be used to clear negative energies.
  • Lemongrass oil and citronella oil deters mosquitoes, fleas, and flies.
  • Peppermint oil can relieve headaches and send spiders running for the hills.
  • Orange oil can bring one’s mood up and invigorate
  • Lavender oil can relax one and relieve stress

Our skin is our largest organ. Essential oils have extremely small molecules that can be quickly absorbed into our skin. These molecules are then absorbed into the bloodstream then spread to the limbic system in the brain. The limbic system consists of many parts of the brain. It affects the autonomic nervous system and the endocrine glands. This is a large part of the human body.

Before applying essential oils on the skin, they should be mixed with a base oil such sweet almond or grapeseed oil.  Certain mixtures of oils can be blended to help certain organs of the body. Once the oil is diluted with the base oil, it can be applied to the skin. Where you apply it depends on what you are treating.

APPLICATION POINTS ARE IMPORTANT

There are several points on the forehead where essential oils can be applied effectively. One point is right between the eyebrows which is the third eye chakra. Another point is on the temples. I use peppermint oil on my temples when I have a headache. The last points are at the base of the head on the left and right sides. This is another place I used peppermint oil when I have a bad headache.

Consulting a holistic doctor before using essential oils is highly recommended. Image credit: geralt

BEFORE YOU START CONSULT A HOLISTIC PRACTITIONER

It’s best to consult an expert and do research to see if a physical condition can possibly be treated using essential oils. Self-treating isn’t recommended unless you visit a holistic practitioner first then follow their instructions. I received advice from my holistic chiropractor. Physical chiropractic adjustments are dangerous for me due to my spinal stenosis and degenerative disc disease. I used essential oils for my pain along with the occasional muscle rub. People are different and need to find a treatment that is right for them. I recommend finding a good holistic doctor and see what your options are. If you are able to use essential oils in lieu of prescription drugs, I say go for it.
